Menezes e Seus Melodistas - Cocktail de Melodias (1956)

Mocambo LP 10009

When I first saw this 10' Lp I thought that it is another unlisted album by the famous violão player José Menezes.
A closer look revealed that, although this Menezes' name is also José Menezes, José Menezes and José Menezes are two different musicians and that this José Menezes (or simply Menezes, to quote the linear notes) plays clarinet (on this album, at least).
Anyway, looks like Cocktail de Melodias is José Menezes' only recording and to see what José Menezes looks like, you will have to download the album and take a look at the back cover where a picture of the complete conjunto is printed, together with the linear notes. My guess is that José Menezes is the one sitting and holding the vinyl, while his musicians are probably those standing around him:

Menezes (Clarinete)
Martins (Acordeom)
Torres (Piano)
Martins II (Bateria)
Gerson (Baixo)
Gaúcho do Violão (Violão)
Inaldo (Bongo)

The compositions are:

1. Chão Moiadinho (Antônio Barros) Baião
2. Ritmo Latino (Victor Young) Beguine
3. Body And Soul (Robert B. Sour / Edward Heyman / John W. Green / Frank Eyton) Fox
4. Maluquinho (Menezes) Choro
5. Meu Xodozinho (Neusa Rodrigues / José Menezes "zé Cavaquinho") Baião
6. Saudade (Gaúcho do Violão) Bolero
7. I'll Never Smile Again (Ruth Lowe) Fox
8. Temperado (Inaldo Vilarim / José Menezes) Choro

ABOUT MENEZES by José Teles:
José Menezes was one maestro from Perambuco. He’s a sax player too. He was also a band leader and a composer of frevo, one of the greats. The first record of Gravadora Rozenblit, in 1953, a 78 rpm, got one of his frevos canção, Boneca. He was born in 1924, and passed away in 2013 He made a lot of records, not only Rozenblit, but RCA and other labels.

Comments

I noticed that there were no comments for quite a long time lately which is unusual, so I decided to check it all out by sending a test comment on Parallel Realities just to see what will happen:
I found out that after Blogger changed it's dashboard some time ago, the comment alert is no longer red and immediately visible when opening the dashboard.
Instead one has to first click on COMMENTS to open the comments drop down menu and after that click on AWAITING MODERATION.
Only then the list of all the pending comments appeared and I could approve and publish them.
Sorry for the delay, friends!

Paul Winter, Luiz Bonfa, Roberto Menescal and Luiz Eca - Rio (1963)

Columbia CL 2315

Luiz Bonfá, Roberto Menescal, Luiz Eça. Brazil's great young musicians (at the time) together on Paul Winter's album called Rio, released in 1963.

Come to think of it I can't remember that any renowned musician from the United States has failed to make (after 1962). at least one album inspired by Brazilian music.

Maybe the only exception is the great jazz pianist Red Garland who stopped releasing music in 1962 honestly explaining it with a sudden lack of public interest in jazz.

Anyway, here is Paul Winter after getting an infusion of fresh blood, rhythm and inspired compositions:

01. Reza (Lobo / Guerra)
02. Vagamente (Menescal / Boscoli)
03. Tristeza De Nos Dois (Ferreira / Einhorn / Bebeto)
04. Daniele (Eça / Bebeto)
05. Alem Da Imaginação (Menescal / Boscoli)
06. Rio (Menescal / Boscoli)
07. Avion (Song Of The Jet) (Jobim)
08. Adriana (Menescal / Freire)
09. Inutil Paisagem (Jobim / de Oliveira)
10. Zomba (Bonfá / Toledo)
11. Saudade (Bonfá / Toledo)
12. Ela É Carioca (Jobim)

The back cover displays one short text by Paul Winter and a long one by Vinicius de Moraes. Both texts are in Englsh.

Ivan e Seu Conjunto - Uma Noite No Bem (N/D)

Caravelle LP-CAR. 33.002

About this album I can tell you only that it is a recording by Ivan and his conjunto, recorded at an unknown date.

About Ivan I can not tell you anything, except that his name sounds Russian to me.

About his conjunto I can present only the results of the member count, obtained after hand counting the musicians on the back cover photograph: There are 9 of them or more, if somebody was hiding behind somebody else during the taking of the picture.

About the music itself there is a long, unsigned text on the back cover, which I do not recommend reading because a much clearer impression you will have after hearing these compositions with your own ears than trusting ears of a text writer about who you know nothing except that he was working for Caravelle at an undefined period of time:

01. Ia... Ia... Cha Cha Cha (Billy May)
02. Gulliver (F. S. Domirom / J. E. Chapuseaux)
03. Só Danço Samba (Tom / Vinicius de Moraes)
04. Suave é a Noite (Webster / S. Fain)
05. Se Já Não me queres (Gilberto de Almeida / Lewis Jr.)
06. Al di la (Drake / Donida)
07. El Sacy y la Camisa (Perez Prado)
08. Apache (J. Jordan)
09. Avec no Leblon (L. Mergulão / U. Silva / P. Aguiar)
10. Et maintenant (Bécaud / P. Delanoe)
11. Bali Rai (Oscar Rodgers / Hammerstein)
12. Dang Dang (Guy Dovan / Jean Rolle)

МАША И МЕДВЕДЬ

ABOUT IVAN by Brazilliance: I suspect that this is Ivanildo José da Silva who released two more albums on Caravelle: Do Coração do Ceará (LP-CAR 33.011) and Duas Faces de Bossa (LP-CAR 33.016, shown on the back cover of this album).
Só Danço Samba and El Saco y La Camisa, the most recent songs in this track list, were both introduced in 1963, thus, this is fairly likely the year of the release. Interestingly, the catalog number Caravelle LP-CAR 33.002 appears also on Surfing Success by the Elevens from 1964.

As 12 Melhores de Roberto Muller (1976)

Som SOLP-40706

Although singer Roberto Muller's discography counts at least 19 career albums, several "Best of" compilations of which the one presented today as Roberto's premiere on Parallel Realities is unlisted, 10 compactos and even two 78 rpm records, I must confess that I have been completely unaware of him and his music until I received this recording three days ago from Pedro & 300discos.

There is no information about him on the back cover, but according to his rendition of these compositions, I suppose that he has must have been quite popular during the period from 1961 to 1987:

Entré/CBS 4079

About singer Ari Vilela, the King of Breque I can tell you only that he and/or the producer of his first career album claim(s) that he is the King of Breque.
Also I can repeat here what I read elsewhere else: In 1973 he has released his second LP which was orchestrated and conducted by Maestro Nelsinho and he was one of the four principal performers on Expo-Som 73 live, together with Leny Andrade, Márcia and Simone.
Maybe I should also mention three compactos listed on Memoria Musical.

He is singing:

01. Saco de Pancada (Zé do Violão / Maria Clara (1))
02. Proverbiano (Niquinho / Hélio Nascimento)
03. Ela Foi Embora (Nuno Soares / José da Silva)

Ivanildo Vila Nova e Geraldo Amancio - Violas de Ouro (1976)

Musicolor 1.04-405-184

Another viola duo consisting of Ivanildo Vila Nova and Geraldo Amancio who are also the authors of the music they are performing is presented for the first time in this parallel reality.
This album is, as you might have guessed, unlisted. On the other hand, Ivanildo Vila Nova has two listed viola duo career albums one recorded with Sebastião Dias in 1981 and the other with Severino Feitosa, released in 1980.
Geraldo Amancio is, as far as Memoria Musical's listing is concerned, not mentioned at all, which does not mean that this is his only release...
Braulio Tavares, the author of the linear notes can tell you more about these two artists and this recording, which is according to his text, their first.

North-east sounds like:

1. Deus O Homem e A Natureza (Sextilhas)
2. O Mesageiro da Fé (Mote)
3. Turismo pelo Brasil (Galope B. Mar)
4. A Vida de Cada Um (Quadrão Mineiro)
5. O Sertão em Carne e Alma (Martelo Agalopado)
6. Deu Tudo ao Contrário (Mourão Voltado)
7. Revoltas Brasileiras (Brasil de Pai Tomás)
8. Giro pelo Mundo (Gabinete)

Antonio de Franca e Jose Cardoso - Violas e Violeiros (1981)

Sertanejo/Chantecler 2.11.405.369

Violeiros Antônio de França and José Cardoso from Limoeiro do Norte are for the first time on Parallel Realities. As the discography of musician from the North is seldom completely listed, I can not be sure that this is, as Memoria Musical says, really their only album.
On the other hand the back cover has a story about them and their career straight from the pen of Rose Guirro, so I suggest to read it as it offers more facts than I, who know nothing, could possibly do.

The compositions are:

1. A Volta do Vaqueiro (Chico Pedra) José Cardoso
2. Embolada Esportiva (Otacílio Batista) Antônio de França
3. Brasil de Norte a Sul (Antônio de França / José Cardoso)
4. Caboclo Agricultor (Antônio de França / José Cardoso)
5. Homenagem à Criança (Antônio de França / José Cardoso)
6. Debate de Cantadores (Antônio de França / José Cardoso)

Dancando Com Jose Menezes E Seu Quarteto (1957)

Sinter SLP 1094

I have been sure that my collection of José Menezes' career albums was complete but fortunately I it was another wrong assumption.
Out of the blue, a previously unknown 10' Lp from 1957 appeared in the newest package sent to us by Pedro & 300discos.

The (unsigned) back cover text gives us a quite detailed information about the career of José Menezes, up to 1957, that is.

The names of the musicians playing with him are not listed, but the track list is and it goes as follows:

1. 'na Voce 'na Chitarra e 'o Poco 'e Luna (Carlo Alberto Rossi / U. Calise) Fox-trot
2. Nunca Jamás (Lalo Guerrero) Bolero
3. Chá-chá-chá Mademoiselle (Francis Lopez / Rolf Marbot) Chá-chá-chá

Aladdin Band (1968)

Fermata FB 222

Aladdin Band presented here and today for the first time with their first album after which they have released another one three years later. Their discography counts also several compactos and one EP on CD released last year.

I can not tell you much about Aladdin and his band except for their full names and nicks which I copied from the back cover where their portraits (solo and all together) are also displayed.

No further facts though...

The names and nicknames of the band members are:

Romeu Mantovani Sabrinho "Aladdin" (Guitarra solo, Vocal)
José Vieira da Silva
"Zezinho" (Bateria)
Edmunod Santana
"Ligeirinho" (Baixo)
Joaquim Alves Barreta
"Jota" (Guitarra base)
Antonio Chiaratto Sabrinho
(Sax, Clarineta)
Bill Vogel
(Pistom)
Mario Ferreira Ramos
"Baixinho" (Sax)
Paulo Santos
"Lothar" (Pistom)

Artistic direction: Julio Nagib

Although I have deliberately omitted it in the list of names and nicknames, I feel obliged to stress the fact that Bill Vogel's nickname is surprisingly Bill while it is not surprising at all that José Vieira da Silva's nickname is Zezinho".

The compositions performed:

01. Raunchy (W. Justis / S. Manker)
02. Zabadak (H. Blaikley / Vrs. Aladin)
03. Cornflake (T. Osborne)
04. Harley Davidson (S. Gainsbourg)
05. Congratulations (B. Martin / P. Coulter)
06. Theme From The Valley Of The Dolls (André Previn / Dory Previn)
07. Happiness Is (P. Parnes / P. Evans)

Marion - Ela canta assim - Coletanea (1945 - 1965)

Parallel Realities Studio Nov 2016

A few days ago I posted Elas Cantam Assim (1957) a 10' lp on which 4 ladies are presented and each of them is singing two compositions and wondered why Marion, an excellent but almost completely forgotten radio singer, has not recorded more music.
Three days ago Edson Mendes returned from a travel through other times and realities where he collected altogether 18 compositions sung by Marion and sent them to me,
His collection had a name but not a cover, so I did the only logical thing to do in such cases: Started a travel myself in order to find a suitable cover. As you have guessed, I found one, repacked it all and uploaded it on server.

The 18 songs are:

01 Doce veneno (1945) (Valzinho / M. Goulart / C. Lentine) - com Milionários do Ritmo
02 Parece até doença (1956) (Vicente Amar)
03 Consequência do carnaval (1956) (Irany de Oliveira)
04 Botãozinho em flor (1953) (José Braga)
05 Calvário do amor (1957) (Marino Pinto / Raul Sampaio)
06 Lili bolero (1952) (Sidney Lippman / E. Moore / Sylvia Dee – versão: Bidú Reis)
07 Minha Loló (1956) (Vicente Celestino) - com Ivon Curi
08 O nosso amor teve fim (1952) (Dino Ferreira / Bororó)
09 Praia vermelha (gravação não comercial - c. 1956) (Getúlio Macedo / Lourival Faissal)
10 Sem rancor (1957) (Mário Lago / Roberto Faissal)
11 Calvário do amor (1957) (Marino Pinto / Raul Sampaio)
12 Não diga não (1956) (Tito Madi  / Georges Henry)
13 Chove lá fora (1957) (Tito Madi)

A 33 1/3 rpm EP with just two compositions as part of the soundtrack for Boca de Ouro de Nelson Rodrigues.

Composed and directed by Remo Usai:

1. Abertura (Remo Usai)
2. Tema (Remo Usai)

By the way, I am watching quite a lot of movies lately and some time ago I have decided to create some IMDb lists of films which I enjoyed very much for various reasons and which I recommend watching.
There are no links for download of movies, but for the majority it should not be a problem to find streams on the net by entering "Movie title (year) watch online" in the search.
I added the links to these lists in form of several movie posters on the right column of Parallel Realities Music which are grouped according to topic or manner and which you may click to access the lists with all information available about the plot, writers, directors, actors etc, as well as images.

This soundtrack presented today is also the start of a new list named Soundtracks presented on Parallel Realities, containing links to IMDb information about most of the movies that were presented here.

All lists will be updated accordingly.

The only (?) album by piano player Lucas.

You may read Alberto Rêgo's text about him on the back cover, but apart from the information that Lucas was well known by the listeners of Rio de Janeiro radio and TV emissions and the wrong prediction that he will became a famous name of the disco industry, the the text describes his way of playing the piano.

There is, of course, a much better way to find out how he plays: By directly listening to:

01. Samba do Adeus (Frédéric Chopin)
02. Crepúsculo (Frédéric Chopin)
03. La Mer (Charles Trenet)
04. Carnavalito (el Humahuaqueño) (Edmundo P. Zaldivar)
05. O Amor e o Passarinho (Fausto Guimarães / Osmar Navarro)
06. No Me Platiques (Vicente Garrido)
07. Convite ao Samba (Inaldo Vilarim / Gaúcho)
08. Body And Soul (Robert B. Sour / Edward Heyman / John W. Green / Frank Eyton)
09. Cumaná (Roc Hillman / Barclay Allen / Harold Spina)
10. Improviso no Choro (Frédéric Chopin)
11. Eu Não Existo Sem Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
12. El Reloj (Roberto Cantoral)

By the way, the mustached gentleman on the front cover has been featured already on several LP fronts mainly for his decorative value and should not be mistaken for Lucas the piano player.

Nanai e Turma do Sereno - Zé Carioca e Seu Conjunto - Personalidades (1956)

RGE RLP 007

Nanai has made a good impression with his other album Noite de Samba No Nanai (1965) which was posted here two and half years ago.

Searches conducted at that time have revealed the existence of another album featuring this outstanding personality: Personalidades, a 10' Inch LP, shared with another, to me previously unknown artist: Zé Carioca.

I placed this rarity immediately on my Santa Claus list and this morning Santa sent it to us via Pedro & 300discos.

About Nanai and Zé Carioca you may read a text written by Roberto Côrte-Real. His text reveals also a big part of Zé Carioca's real name but unfortunately a few letters are covered so that it looks something like JOSÉ PATRO????O DE OLIVEIRA.
Nanai's real name was revealed to us by Sidney Ferreira shortly after the publication of his '65 album as Arnaldo Humberto de Medeiros.

Lado A - Zé Carioca:

1. Três Estrelinhas (Pixinguinha)
2. Dois Brasileiros Em Tokyo (Oliveira)
3. Dois de Junho (Ângelo Apolônio ''Poly'')
4. Desilusão (Oliveira)

Lado B - Nanai:

5. Teus Olhinhos (Nanai)
6. September Song (Kurt Weill / Maxwell Anderson)
7. Lua Boba (Henrique Simonetti / Nadir Peres)
8. Morro Mas Não Entrego (Haroldo Barbosa)

ABOUT MARKO RUPE by Brazilliance:
In 1962, Marko Rupe, sometimes credited as Marco Ruppi, arranged and conducted the exquisite A Voz Balanco… Samba 35 mm by Sandra.
The next year, he is credited as Maestro on the back cover of Sambalanço by Orquestra Moderna de Sambas which actually is Sandra’s album re-recorded with instrumental versions in different order except Nuvem. You can take a look at this cover on my website
There seems to be at least one other album by him called Marko Rupe e seu Guitarras Epiphone.
