Quarteto Monte Carlo - Drink Musical (1960)

Prestige DLP 1015

Quarteto Monte Carlo has created a pleasant impression with their first LP, so out of the just arrived package from Pedro & 300discos, I have decided to post it as first.

Unfortunately, if some pleasant surprise does not jump out of the dark, it completes their discography, consisting of only 2 career albums.

The gambling or other activities background music continues with:

Orquestra Moderna de Camara - Brasil Bossa Nova (N/D)

Nilser NS 1006

Orquestra Moderna de Camara has been posted somewhere on the net before, as I remember seeing this cover, but can not remember when and where.
Anyway, as far as I know, this is their only album and they have also released a compacto duplo.
Their premiere on Parallel Realities is, as you could guess, accompanied with no fact or relevant information at all.

The linear notes by Sebastião Fonseca, explain a lot about Bossa Nova and inform us that Luiz Bonfá, Tom and Vinicius, Dolores Duran and others, are principle Bossa artists, but (probably because of my poor understanding of Portuguese) I found nothing about the Orquestra Moderna de Camara.

On the other hand, ten medleys speak more than ten thousand Dollars:

01. Solução (Raul Sampaio / Ivo Santos)
Dizem Por Aí (Manoel da Conceição / Alberto Paz)
02. Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
O Menino Desce o Morro (Vera Brasil / De Rosa)
03. Idéias Erradas (Ribamar / Dolores Duran)
Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
04. Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
      Leva Meu Samba (Ataulfo Alves)
05. Meditação (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
      Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
06. Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
Desafinado (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
07. Manhã de Carnaval (Luiz Bonfá / Antônio Maria)
A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
08. Samba Triste (Baden Powell / Billy Blanco)
O Barquinho (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
09. Menina Moça (Luis Antônio)
      Mulher de Trinta (Luis Antônio)
10. Mulata Assanhada (Ataulfo Alves)

MORE ABOUT ORQUESTRA MODERNA DE CAMARA by Fausto Neves:
This disc is the only one of this orchestra, which in fact is not a “modern camera orchestra”
The truth is that it is a group of "bossa nova" music, with the addition of string instruments.
And with very good Brazilian musicians.

The linear notes by Sebastião Fonseca does not explain much and there is
much more text on the technical quality of the recording

Artistic direction - Radames Gnattali

Radames Gnattali - piano
José Menezes - guitar;
Chiquinho - accordion;
Pedro Vidal Ramos - bass;
Luciano Perrone - percussion;
Irani Pinto - 1st violin;
Copinha - flute and piccolo;
Marcello Pompeu Filho - 2nd violin;
Iberê Gomes Grosso - cello.;

The incredible thing is that neither on the Radamés Gnattali site nor on Ricardo Cravo Albin Dictionary of Brazilian Popular Music, this record does not appear as a work of  Radamés Gnattali.
Listening to it, there is no doubt that this is another magnificent work of that master.

Norberto Macedo - Portinari 90 Anos - Coracao Brasileiro (1983)

Kuarup KCP 90

After the publication of Norberto Macedo's  Norberto Macedo - Meu Violao... Minha Seresta... (1969) Nilton Antonio Rodrigues Maia contacted me and offered to send us the complete discography of Norberto Macedo, an offer which I simply would not and could not refuse..

This was the third Norberto Macedo’s record, launched as non-commercial by a graphic arts company and given as a gift for its clients in 1993. It contains his own compositions played by him, two other guitarists (his pupils) and a harpsichord player.
The record was a tribute for the 90th birthday of the great Brazilian painter Candido Portinari (1903-1962) and some compositions have the same name as Portinari’s paints. For example: O Sonho (The Dream), Um Baile na Roça (A Rural Ball), Namorados (Valentine):

Steve Bernard e Seu Conjunto - Aqui - Compacto Duplo

Odeon EP-20231

Some time ago I was contacted by Steve Bernard's daughter Sandra Bernhardt, who was pleased to find here the posts about her father and promised to send me the recordings I did not have. Also she was so kind to write a text about her father, clearing some misinformation about him which were also published at the usual hub for distorted facts: Parallel Realities.

Here is Sandra's integral text covering the so far undisclosed parts of Steve Bernard's life and history:

Steve Bernard was born in Brasov, Romenia (Roumania).
He was a Jew but before getting married to my mother, Eva, he converted to Christianity (Catholic). They got married on Dec, 19, 1954 in a Catholic church named Nossa Senhora da Paz, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Eva, was a very famous and gracious dancer, known as Eva Lanthos. She was born in Budapest, Hungary.

As far as I know, he began to play classical music very early, in Brasov, Roumania (not in Vienna).
At the age of 18, he was awarded in several Competitions in Vienna,  played piano in cinemas and with some singers like, Lilly Fayol, Gina Liano and Arthur Allam. A few years later he had his Band with presentations in Bucharest, Roumania
Moved to Paris to study at Sorbonne (Philosophy and Music), made tours in England and Canada before coming to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1952, after Paul Péri's invitation.

Paul Péri, was a famous French actor / singer.  He invited Steve to play at the Golden Room, Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio in 1952.  Some days later Mauricio Lanthos and Waldir Calmon invited him to play the Hammond B3 Organ, recently bought, at Arpège (nobody knew how to manage the Organ, just Steve!)  He needed to live in a tropical city in order to feel better from his constant pains (MD recommendation) and decided to live in Rio

The next step was the his first record - Steve Bernard e sua Arte -  produced by Sinter in 1954 and the second one in 1955., formed his band and .... you have all information about him after that...

Tracks:

1. To The End of The Earth (Joe Sherman / Noel Sherman)
2. Sonoroso (K.Ximbinho / Del Loro)
3. Suas Mãos (Ayres da Costa Pessoa "Pernambuco" / Antônio Maria)

With this post, singer Victor Rafael's known discography consisting of two career albums is brought to light, together with the orchestration directed by Maestro Astor Silva.
The bad news is that his other album Quando A Noite Acontece (1963), posted less than two years ago you may only admire by looking at the front cover, as the file containing his music has been deleted from server and I added the horrifying DOWNLOAD YESTERDAY advice next to the text previously leading to Depositfiles.

Mario de Azevedo - Subindo Ao Ceu (1960)

Sinter SLP 1789

The great piano player Mário de Azevedo has released an uncountable number of 78 Rpm recordings starting from 1943 and at least 8 Lps, yet today is the first time he is appearing on Parallel Realities with his last career album released in 1960 by Sinter.

A poetic text on the back cover by Fernando Lôbo explains more about his music, and the track list shows some great composers (just google Viúva Guerreiro and see when her compositions were composed).

Cool down from yesterday's Pixinguinha heat with delicate sounds of Mário's solo piano interpreting:

01. Subindo Ao Céu (Aristides Manuel Borges)
02. Quando Penso Em Ti (Viúva Guerreiro)
03. Saudade (Graça Guardia)

Guerra Peixe - Festa de Ritmos (1956)

Copacabana CLP 3026

Here is the second promised ultra-rarity sent to us by friend Fausto Neves:

The first career album (a 10' Lp) of Maestro Guerra Peixe bears the same name as the radio broadcast of Radio of São Paulo (1956) which was produced, directed and presented by Guerra-Peixe.

This album was two years later released by Decca France as:

Rythmes brésiliens / documents sonores recueillis par Max de Rieux au Brésil  ???(© 1958)!!! Decca – France
Rythmes brésiliens, Bibliothèque nationale de France.

As you can see Max de Rieux went as far as to copyright other people's work in an arrogant colonial manner which throws a dark shadow upon him, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and Decca France.

Fausto Neves has included two documents (in English) inside this package, one with detailed explanations about this release, each song and another one about his favourite track and Rabeca as an instrument, which I recommend reading.

Here are just the basic facts:

Orchestra, choir and arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Peixe.

Lado A (Fxs. 1 - 4):

Vocal: Gilberto Alves, Sivuca, Leny Eversong e Coro
Instrumentais:  José Passidono (Flautim)

Lado B (Fxs. 5 - 8):

Vocal: Catulo de Paula, Gilberto Alves, Nuno Roland e Coro

The tracks are:

1. Irmão Irmão (Tradicional / Rec. Rossini Tavares de Lima) Tambu
2. Jornada de Lapinha (Tradicional / Rec. Guerra Peixe) Pastoril
3. Caboclinhos (Guerra Peixe) Caboclinho
4. Nego Bole Sete (Guerra Peixe) Maracatu
5. De Viola a Rabeca (Guerra Peixe) Cantoria
6. Jurupanã (Autor Desconhecido) Coco
7. Eu Sentei Praça (Guerra Peixe / Manoel Antônio Franceschini) Jongo
1ª estrofe: Tradicional-Rec. Manoel Antônio Franceschini
    2ª estrofe: Guerra Peixe)
8. Uniká-de-xangô (Tradicional / Rec. Guerra Peixe) Jongo

P.S. I just received from Fausto Neves also the Decca labels so I updated the package by adding them:

ABOUT NORBERTO MACEDO by Nilton Maia:

The guitarist Norberto Macedo was my guitar teacher during many years and my friend since 1965. He was a great musician, besides very good composer and teacher. Unfortunately he died four years ago (in august 27, 2011).
He had three LPs, three CD’s and one K7 launched, all of them of high quality, besides a guitar method published. One of the LPs was dedicated to Villa-Lobos’s guitar music and was considered one of the best interpretations of this music by whom that had the pleasure to listen it, including some music critics. So, your post can be considered a tribute to Norberto.
If you want to know a little more about Norberto access this blog, please:

http://www.geocities.ws/norbertomacedo/pindex.html

He also can be watched in Youtube by this link, playing a “choro” composed for his son Leonardo, when he was a child. In this vídeo Norberto makes a tribute to Leonardo’s memory because he died some years before the video, at the age of 32.

Quincas e Os Copacabanas - Das 11 As 4 (1959)

Odeon MOFB 3062

Tenor sax player Al Quincas with and without Os Copacabana can be found in this and the other reality, but the Lp I have the chance to present now, I can not remember having even seen anywhere before.

In the linear notes written by Lucio Rangel you may read all you wanted to know about Coleman Hawkins but were afraid to ask and he even adds a few lines about Al Quincas and this album, so I suggest (as usual in such cases) to read it.

Anyway, para dançar is my choice of instrumental music, unfortunately almost impossible to find performed nowadays, so I suggest (as usual in such cases) to enjoy it preferably on the dance floor, but an easy chair and speakers will also do the job needed to enjoy:

01. O Apito no Samba (Luiz Bandeira / Luis Antônio)
02. Rico Vacilon (Rosendo Ruiz)
03. Tenderly (Walter Gross / Jack Lawrence)

Musica Brasileira Vol 4 (1956 - 57)

Sinter SLP - 4

A friend from Brazil, Fausto Neves has just sent me two rarities.
The first one, I am posting right now is the 4 Lp in the Música Brasileira series consisting of 10 ultra-rare volumes of which existence I was not aware before.

If someone has the other 9 volumes, I will be happy to post them here.

Here is the complete text written by Fausto:

The Música Brasileira series was the first and important collection (or anthology) of Brazilian classical music to vinyl records. A diplomatic initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cultural Divisão do MRE-Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil) in 1956 -1957.
The criteria was the priority for original works and lesser known composers. The art direction was by the Brazilian composer Claudio Santoro and the participation of Radio MEC.

The recording, only in the mono version, was made by the Sinter label (Sociedade Interamericana de Representações - Rio de Janeiro) that has opened a new studio in 1957.
Sinter has been a pioneer in the modernization of the Phonographic Industry in Brazil, the first to launch the LP record in Brazil (1951) and turned Brazil the fourth country to produce Lp, after the United States, England and France.

Unfortunately, the recordings of the Musica Brasileira series are poor quality ones and only the mono version which is not explained, because in the same year 1957 Sinter began recording in stereo.

The Sinter label was a property of CBD - Companhia Brasileira de Discos, also representative in Brazil for labels Verve, Decca and Westminster.
In 1958 CBD was purchased by Philips Phonographische Industry.

The recording of the Música Brasileira series Lps begans in 1956, finished in early 1957 and distributed in July.

The Brazilian Music series was never released commercially. These LPs were distributed by Brazilian embassies to radio stations, mainly in Europe. It was relegated to oblivion, maybe for the poor quality of the recordings, and has become a rarity

Volumes 2 and 3 are the most important because there are unique recordings of renowned Brazilian composers works.

The picture of covers is similar in each of the ten covers – a detail of a work of the Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho, (Antônio Francisco Lisboa (1738 – 1814), without any information about.

The National Library of France has digitized five volumes (4,5,6,8 and 10) in 2014. However the original LPs are really poor quality and the 5 others may not be available.

The works:

Sonata n. 3 I Alegro (1947-48) Claudio Santoro: - Hector Alimonda; piano
Sonata n. 3 II Lento (1947-48) Claudio Santoro: - Hector Alimonda; piano

Conjunto de Percussao Dora Pinto (1960)

Chantecler CMG 2071

Last Saturday evening, a friend told me that he had a conversation about music over the net with a lady from another country (I can't remember which) where he recommended her to visit Parallel Realities and take a look.
Her comment after doing it was that, apart from ladies singing, she could not find any female musicians performing on any album she found while visiting my site.

Just men and only men...

The same evening, a few hours later, the package from Pedro & 300discos arrived.

After unpacking I found this album and could not believe my eyes:
At first sight looking on the front cover, a assumed that it is a female instrumental percussion trio.

After a detailed inspection I realized that it is not a trio, but that (if I counted correctly) there are twenty ladies, arranging, playing various instruments and singing:

General management, arrangements and notes by Dora Pinto

Special guest singer: Lourdinha Brasil

Pianists: Ilka Valle, Luiza Ceccareilli

Soloists: Marilia Oliveira, Marilza Carvalho, Yvonne Maia Forte

The group: Alaida Witte, Ayrsa Prochownick, Celeste Arcias, Daisy Pinto, Dulce Plinio, Ely Airam, Heloisa Rabello, Inge Muller, Lin Della Nina, Liliana Soares de Paula, Regina Sampaio, Ruth Loureiro, Smary Tavares da Silva

The story about Dora Pinto is highly interesting and is presented in the linear notes both in Portuguese and English on the inside cover of this only (?) recording that Conjunto de Percussão Dora Pinto has released and I suggest reading it.

The compositions:

01. Noite de Temporal (Dorival Caymmi)
02. Hei de Seguir Teus Passos (Waldemar Henrique)
03. Malagueña (Ernesto Lecuona)
04. Obaluaiê (Abigail Moura)
05. Jongo (Oscar Lorenzo Fernández)
06. Lundu Amazonense (Arnaldo Rebello)
07. Chorinho Elegante (Babi de Oliveira)
08. Dança Macabra Op 40 (C. Saint / Shens)
09. Pássaro Desconhecido (Ivette Carvalho)
10. Sessão de Macumba (Tradicional)
11. Porque (Ivette Carvalho)
12. Domingo (Nênia Fernandes)

Abel Ferreira - Acariciando (1958)

(1958) Todamérica LPP-TA-311
(1978) RGE 307.4008

First career album of the famous clarinet player Abel Ferreira, recorded 1958 for Todamérica and reissued 1978 by RGE. Covers and labels from both editions are included in this package, so you may chose which one to use to decorate your compact disc jewel case, plus it gives you the opportunity to read both back cover texts about Abel Ferreira and this recording.

Altogether beautiful music, so far probably Abel's best (from my point of view), accented by his daughter Vânia Ferreira's specific voice on three tracks.

Vânia Ferreira can also be heard on another album by Abel Ferreira from 1977 called Abel Ferreira & Filhos, where she is singing Acariciando (which is here presented as an instrumental) and on another track, singing together with Leonardo Bruno.

No idea why Vânia Ferreira has not continued her singing career, but it is a pity.

I hope that you will enjoy these tracks as much as I enjoyed them after opening the newly arrived package sent to us by Pedro & 300discos.

The tracks:

01. Acariciando (Abel Ferreira / Lourival Faissal)
02. Luar de Caxambu (Abel Ferreira)
03. Orchids In The Moonlight (Vincent Youmans / Gus Kahn / Edward Eliscu)
04. Suspense (Alcyr Pires Vermelho / Wilson Falcão)
05. Velho Portugal Menino (Abel Ferreira / Vânia Ferreira)
06. Constantemente (Abel Ferreira) com Vânia Ferreira
07. Deep Purple (Peter DeRose / Mitchell Parish)
08. Um Brasileiro em Hollywood (João Leal Brito ''Britinho'' / Nelson Trigueiro)
09. Sonho Negro (Abel Ferreira)
10. Melancolia (Abel Ferreira / Vânia Ferreira) com Vânia Ferreira
11. Beijinho na Orelha (Abel Ferreira / Vânia Ferreira)
12. O Que Passou, Passou (Abel Ferreira / Marlene) com Vânia Ferreira

Maestro Arcy Barbosa with his orchestra and (as far as I could find out) his only recording (at least under his own name).

Os Versateis (1964)

Copacabana CLP - 11368

Os Versáteis I have never heard before and I could not tell you much about them yesterday, but today i know that they consist of Ary Fontoura and Odelair Rodrigues as well as I know other facts about them and their art concept as in the meantime I read the back cover text written by Vinícius Coêlho, which you can also read and know much more than I know, especially if Portuguese is your native language.

Anyway, this recording consists of two different sides.

The first one is a short theatre play with dialogues which you will surely understand better than I did, with Odelair Rodrigues singing one song.

The other side is purely musical: Ary Fontoura is singing all six compositions:

Lado A - Com Ary Fontoura e Odelair Rodrigues:

01. Abertura - Orquestra
(Can-can, motivo de "Deputado", de Inami Custodio Pinto)

02. Traillers
      (Ary Fontuoura) Com Ary Fontoura

03. Superstição - Samba
      (Inami Custodio Pinto)
      Canta: Odelair Rodrigues

04. Piadas (D.P.)
      Com Ary Fontoura

05. Deputado - Conga
      (Ary Fontuoura)
      Canta: Ary Fontoura

06. Dr. Pomposo
      (Ary Fontoura)
(com motivos de "Deputado", de Inami Custodio Pinto)

Lado B - Com Ary Fontoura:

07. Conselho da Vovó - Cha-cha-cha
      (Inami Custodio Pinto)

08. Não Importa - Bolero
      (Inami Custodio Pinto)

09. Discussão
      (Dora Lopes / Genival Melo)

10. Enigma - Samba-canção
      (Ary Fontuoura)

11. Tudo Prá Mim É Você - Samba-canção
      (Candido dos Santos)

12. Mais Uma Valsa... Mais Uma Saudade - Valsa

ARY FONTOURA by Edson Mendes:
Ary Fontoura is a famous Brazilian actor, with many works in theatre, movies and TV (more than 40 soap operas). Wikipedia says that he reached to record this LP based on the experience he had achieved singing romantic songs, as boleros and samba-canções, in Curitiba's brothels.  Curitiba is his native city.

Ciccillo e Seu Violino - Um Beijo E Um Violino (1959)

Polydor LPNG 4035

Former Konzertmeister of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and one of the Konzertmeisters of the Orquestra Rádio National, violin player Ceccilio's first and only (?) career album on which he plays, beside his main instrument, the violin, also bandolim (as playback), playing Italian compositions the Brazilian way, and Brazilian compositions the Italian way, creating thus (to quote Miguel Cury, the author of the back cover linear notes about Ceccilio's life and art) a musical bridge between Brazil and Italy.

Needles to mention that Ceccilio is Italian, as his name clearly discovers the fact.

The twelve bridges are:

01. Piccolissima Serenata (Gianni Ferrio / Antonio Amurri)
02. O Cachimbo do Ciccillo (Romeu Fossati)
03. Malafemmena (Antonio de Curtis ''Totó'')
04. Luna Rossa (A. Avian / V. de Crescenzo)
05. Arrivederci Roma (Renato Rascel / Pietro Garinei / Sandro Giovannini)
06. E Troppo Tardi (Walter Coli)
07. Come Prima (Mario Panzeri / Sandro Taccani / Vincenzo Di Paola)
08. Sonoroso (K-Ximbinho / Del Loro)
09. Anema e Core (Salvatore D'Esposito / Tito Manlio)
10. Em Continência ao Choro (Eduardo Patané)
11. Balada Triste (Dalton Vogeler / Esdras Pereira da Silva)
12. Torna A Surriento (Ernesto de Curtis)

Gallo e Seu Conjunto - Um Drink Dancante (1958)

Columbia LPCB 40004

Piano player Gallo, presented about a month ago with his first career album. Now here is his second one.

The cast is different this time and consists of:

Gallo: Piano
Paulo Nunes (Paulinho): Guitarra
João Alves do Carmo (Joãozinho): Bateria
Gumercindo Nogueira da Silva (Gugu): Contrabaixo
Amaury Rodrigues: Ritmo

The tracks:

01. Adios Muchachos (César Vedani / Julio César Sanders)
02. Promessa (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)
03. Saudade da Bahia (Dorival Caymmi)
04. When Lights Are Low (Carter / Williams)
Bop-tura (Dare You Bop) (Charlie Ventura)
05. Espinita (Nico Jimenez)
06. I Love You Samantha (Cole Porter)
07. Vola Colomba (Carlo Concina / Bruno Cherubini)
08. Luna Rossa (A. Avian / V. de Crescenzo)
09. Esperame En El Cielo (Francisco Lopez Vidal "Paquito")
10. Meet Mister Callaghan (Eric Spears)
11. I Could Have Danced All Night (Alan Jay Lerner / Frederick Loewe)
12. Only You (Buck Ram / Ande Rand)

After quick listening to several tracks, I burned this album immediately to CD and could not stop playing it over and over again.
Once again it happens: Playing pure para dançar relieves the musicians of the pressure to create art that will amaze the public and critics and get a place in music history (an attitude which so often leads  to catastrophic results) and makes it possible to really create something outstanding.
Well Gallo and his conjunto have created a masterpiece here, pure beauty, elegance and excitement.
Impressive!
